Traditional architecture on Kinmen, Republic of China ROC (Taiwan). ..Kinmen (Jinmen) formely known as Quemoy. The island lies less than 2km off the coast of China, and in 1949 was turned into a front-line of defense for Taiwan by Chiang Kai-shek and the Chinese nationalist Kuomintang (KMT) in the ongoing war with the communist PRC. The island existed under martial law until 1993. Today, Kinmen is a popular tourist destination and home to a lot of traditional Fujian-style architecture.
